National Newspaper ABCs (Oct 09): Daily Mail and The Sun post consistent circulation figures

The Daily Mail and The Sun appear to be maintaining a steady circulation. Has the decline now reached a plateau?

The Daily Mail registered a circulation of 2,157,085 copies, down just 0.55% year on year. It is thought that the newspaper’s promotional giveaways played a large role maintaining steady figures. The Daily Mail, which has maintained a circulation of 2.2 million over the last five months, assisted its October figures with its EuroMillions promotional competition and Hollywood icon DVDs.

Whilst the Daily Mail posted steady circulation figures, other papers, excluding The Sun and the Daily Star, did not fair as well. Northern & Shell's Daily Star upped circulation by 20% to 836,556 copies. The Sun's circulation remains the right side of 3m, with circulation down just 1.11% year on year to 3,026,556.

The
Guardian and The Observer circulations both dropped sharply, respectively down 11.97% year on year to 311,878, and -19.38% to 366,918; a result of the groups decision to drop bulk distribution of its newspapers.

The Independent posted a circulation uplift of 0.3% from September to 187,047 copies but this is still more than 15,000 copies short of its May ABC figure.
