UTV Media restates opposition to digital switchover
UTV Media has restated its opposition to the Government's planned switch-off of analogue radio, which is to be completed by 2015
UTV believes that the switchover to digital radio undermines the stations that are more closely connected to their local communities. UTV has urged Ofcom to focus on ensuring the future developments of smaller local commercial radio stations and in so doing, the media owner has reiterated its opposition to the extension of the analogue licences held by TalkSport, Classic FM and Absolute Radio.
The digital switchover has caused a rift within the radio industry, with UTV Media, UKRD and The Local Radio Company opposed to the plans.
UTV Media managing Director, Scott Tauton, has voiced concern for the 120 stations that are currently void of a clear digital future, and has articulated the need for clarity regarding future licensing, regulation and distribution plans for these stations.
