Facebook 'eyes digital music move'
17 October 2008 15:27

The founder and chief executive of Facebook Mark Zuckerberg is rumoured to be eyeing a move into digital music following the launch of News Corp's MySpace Music last month.

It is thought that he has been in negotiations with a number of song-streaming services and music community sites, including Rhapsody.com, iMeem.com, iLike.com and Lala.com over the potential of an outsourcing deal, according to a New York Post report.

Although nothing has been confirmed and it is possible that the whole venture may never get off the ground, Zuckerberg and other Facebook executives have met with major record labels to discuss future strategy.

The news provider reports that unlike MySpace, the Google owned website is not looking to secure licences to distribute music or build a proprietary system itself.

Earlier in the week, it was reported that the first teddy bear to have signed up to Facebook - Barty Bristle - has had his account cancelled after administrators mooted that Barty could be someone masquerading as someone else, which could be "dangerous".
